Obituary: Donald L. Johnson, 78; Formerly Of Stratford

A U.S. Navy veteran, he worked in banking and in the early days of Computer IT.

STRATFORD, CT — (From Adzima Funeral Home): Donald Lawrence Johnson, 78, formerly of Stratford, entered into eternal rest on January 11, 2023, at the Mary Wade Home, after a long illness.

Donald was born to the late George & Alice (O’Toole) Johnson and lived in Bridgeport until joining the Navy in 1962. Upon completing his service, Don married Margaret Mary Foley, in September of 1966 and they raised 4 children in Stratford while he worked in banking and in the early days of Computer IT.

Don enjoyed playing golf and traveling with family and friends, often returning with stories about the fantastic meals that were enjoyed. Don loved his 8 grandchildren immensely and could always be counted on to the lead the multitudes of children in ‘the Unicorn Song’ at the beloved annual Labor Day Party in Old Saybrook.

In addition to his parents, Donald is predeceased by Margaret, his loving wife of nearly 50 years, his son Terrence, his brother Robert, and sister-in-law Margaret (Peg) Moriarty Johnson. Donald is survived by his sister Lorraine (Thomas) Burke, sister-in-law Dolores Mazzucco, son Tom (Dora) Johnson, daughter Meg (Roy) DeMott, son Peter Johnson, 8 cherished grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, a niece and several nephews and many great nieces and nephews.

The Johnson family would like to thank the wonderful nurses and staff of the Mary Wade Home for their many years of kind and loving care.

In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make donations in Don’s memory to the Mary Wade Home - Resident Enrichment Fund, 118 Clinton Ave, New Haven, CT 06513

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on January 21, 2023, at 10 a.m., meeting directly at Saint James Church, 2070 Main Street, Stratford. Interment will take place in Oaklawn Cemetery, Fairfield, immediately following Mass. The Adzima Funeral Home, 50 Paradise Green Place, Stratford has been entrusted with the arrangements.
