Obituary: John A. Kandalaft, 81, Of Stratford

STRATFORD, CT — (From Adzima Funeral Home): John A. Kandalaft, 81, of Stratford, beloved husband of Hiyam S. Kandalaft, passed away peacefully in his home on November 28, 2022.

John was born in Cairo, Egypt on September 27, 1941, to the late George and Marie Kandalaft, and had been a longtime area resident.

He was an artist, designer, and the retired Chairman of the Interior Design Department at the University of Bridgeport. He studied at L'Ecole des Beaux Arts de Rouen and received his master’s in architecture from the University of Montreal.

As an artist, known as Jean Alexandre, he had a studio in New Haven and was known for his abstract oil paintings.

Survivors, in addition to his beloved wife of more than 40 years, include his devoted sons, Alexander A. Kandalaft, and his wife Malika of Boston, MA, and Michael A. Kandalaft, and his wife Jennifer of Fairfield, as well as four cherished grandchildren, Elias, Maia, Philip, and Isabelle, sister-in-law, Yacout Kandalaft of Montreal, Canada, and several beloved nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, John was pre-deceased by his brother, Dr. Nicholas Kandalaft of Montreal, Canada.
