Publisher Shutting Down Stratford Star

The publisher of the Stratford Star announced that the company is shutting down several of its weekly newspapers.

STRATFORD, CT — Sad news to report today as the publisher of the Stratford Star has announced that it is shutting down the weekly newspaper after more than 24 years in business. In a statement on the Stratford Star website, Martin V. Hersam, Publisher and CEO of HAN Network, said that the Stratford Star will cease operations, effective this week.

“Due to economic forces buffeting our industry we are rescaling our business again,” Hersam said in the statement. “The recent volatility of the newsprint market made our options clear. The best efforts of our incredible staff and years of strategic planning, retooling and restructuring we could not overcome the economic realities of tepid advertising and subscriber interest in this market. We just could not sustain a publishing business here any longer.”

Hersam also announced that four of the Star’s sister publications — The Easton Courier, Weston Forum, Redding Pilot and Monroe Courier — are also being closed.
