Remains of 17 Bodies Reported Stolen from Stratford Cemetery

The incident was discovered by the caretaker Thursday morning.

Stratford, CT - The remains of 17 bodies reportedly have been stolen from Stratford's Union Cemetery, according to police.

The remains were in urns in a mausoleum that the cemetery's caretaker discovered Thursday morning had been burglarized, writes NBC Connecticut News.

A large hammer was likely used to smash open the mausoleum, according to police.

“I’ve never seen anything like this before. How could somebody do this? I’m in complete shock,” the cemetery’s caretaker told Fox 61.

The theft remains under investigation.
