STRATFORD, CT — The results of community sessions and an online survey about the future of the American Shakespeare Festival Theatre site will be presented to the public at a forum July 9, according to a news release from the mayor's office. Following the presentation, residents will have an hour to provide comments.

Opened in 1955 and host to famous actors and actresses, the theater largely stopped showing plays in the 1980s. There had been talk for decades about how to revitalize the historic property before it burned down in January. Three teenagers have been charged in connection with the fire. The theater site is deeded to the town by the state and intended for community use.

About 700 people offered input about the property through workshops, an online survey and other feedback. Results indicated residents envision the site as a destination for local talent and arts, want improved accessibility to the property and hope to see it become a place for events such as festivals and concerts in the short term, according to a June 25 presentation for the Shakespeare Property Task Force. The theater site provides an opportunity for Stratford to develop a local or regional attraction and address community needs.

The majority of residents hope to see the property used initially for live events and open space, and in the long term as a multi-use arts and entertainment facility or theater, according to the presentation. In terms of financing future site use, community members suggested grants, public-private partnerships, revenue-generating events, and corporate, private and nonprofit funding.

The upcoming public forum will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Town Hall Council Chambers, 2725 Main St. To view the presentation reviewing the results submitted to the task force, visit https://bit.ly/2Nt3kWn.
