Hudson Shakespeare Company to Perform Three Plays Beginning June 28th
The Stratford Library, 2203 Main Street, announces that the Hudson Shakespeare Company of New Jersey will return to Stratford for its ninth annual season of classic productions. Performed outside in the library’s scenic amphitheatre, the three fully-staged and costumed performances are free and open to the public.
The series begins with William Shakespeare’s mistaken identity romantic comedy, “Twelfth Night” on Saturday, June 28 at 2 pm. A shipwrecked girl named Viola (Noelle Fair) finds herself separated from her twin brother, Sebastian (James Ross), and lost in the offbeat land of Illyria. She decides to disguise herself as a man to protect her virtue and seeks refuge in the house of the local Duke Orsino (Nick Bombicino). Orsino currently pines for the lady Olivia (Emily DeSena), who wants nothing to do with him, and, instead falls for the disguised Viola who, in turn, has fallen for Orsino. The production is transported to contemporary Hipster New York City with iconoclastic fashions, modern live songs and over-the-top audience participation. Following “Twelfth Night” will be the Shakespeare classics: “Cymbeline” on July 26 and “Pericles” on August 23.
The Hudson Shakespeare Company is now in its 23rd season of touring Shakespeare and classical works in the tri-state region. At the Stratford Library, performances are held outside and patrons are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets to spread. In the event of inclement weather or extreme heat, the play will move inside to the air-conditioned Lovell Room.
