St. James School Students Share Their Love of Learning

The students of St. James held a special dress down day recently in order to raise funds for the Literacy Center of Milford. The Center, currently celebrating its 20th year, is dedicated to providing ‘no cost services to any individual who wishes to learn the English language or enhance their reading, writing, speaking and math skills necessary to lead productive lives in our community.’

The connection to the Center is personal for the St. James Community.  Among the Literacy Center’s beneficiaries is Magdalena Simon, the spouse of the much beloved Gaspar Simon, who served for more than 20 years as the school’s Director of Maintenance until his untimely passing in 2011. Thanks to the efforts of the volunteers at the Literacy Center of Milford, Magdalena’s English language skills have developed rapidly as she hails from Guatemala.  Now she is able to communicate with her children’s’ teachers, find employment, and even obtain a driver’s license!

All in all, the students raised $500.20, which was presented to the Literacy Center on April 29th in support of the Center’s biggest fundraiser, the Leprechaun Leap.
