STRATFORD, CT — Stop & Shop has chosen the Sterling House Community Center to receive a $1 donation for every reusable shopping bag purchased in the month of August as part of the Stop & Shop Community Bag Program, according to an email from Sterling House. The Stratford Stop & Shop is located at 200 E. Main St.

"Our local Stop & Shop is a huge supporter of SHCC and our community, and we are especially grateful for what they are doing for us this month," the email stated.

The bag program is designed to help shoppers give back to their local community while supporting the environment, according to Stop & Shop's website. Each time a shopper buys a Community Bag with a Giving Tag for $2.50, they can direct a $1 donation to a local nonprofit of their choice within seven days of the purchase. If the customer does not direct the donation within seven days, it will automatically go to the nonprofit that each store's leadership has chosen for the month.

Stop & Shop announced Monday its 91 stores in Connecticut would stop offering single-use plastic bags as of Thursday, the day the state started its new tax on the bags. The bags now cost 10 cents each at retailers that still carry them. The tax will last for almost two years before the bags are banned July 1, 2021.
