Stratford Boys Cross Country Gets a Taste of Wickham Park

On Saturday October 8th, at the distinguished Wickham State Park in Manchester, Ct., the Stratford High School Boys cross country team took part in the 40th annual Wickham Park Invitational. Numerous teams from five New England States participated.
The temperatures hovered around 55 degrees, no wind, crystal clear blue skies, a picture perfect day for cross country racing with abundant sunshine.
Thousands were on hand, on what is considered the mecca of Connecticut cross country race courses, ready to watch racers strategize the tough course conditions and how they would manage the famed “Green Monster”, a hill that seems to never end. Most runners in today’s event were equipped with spikes to help gain the traction advantage in ascending up the more than two hundred yard hill. The hill is made up of a thick grass sod then turns into a water runoff with some erosion as you near the top.
The tree lined pathways, with leaves now starting to change colors in this early autumn season, added a flavor to the numerous team colors from the 29 teams entered into this 5000 meter race.
Stratford High School sent five boys to the starting line in box seven with the race scheduled for a 2:45 start.
Legendary race starter Gene Waring gave the field of 193 racers official race instructions and then sounded the opening blast.
All 193 are tasked with getting into a narrow lane within two-tenths of a mile from the starting line. Runners who do not get there ahead of the pack struggle to gain ground in catching up to the leaders.
Fortunately for Stratford runners Amos Colocho and Ryan Munoz they maintained a quick start and held a position in the top half going into the choke point opening moments.
A big part for Stratford in this race was to gain experience on this course where in three weeks time they will be heading back to make a bid at the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference Class L Championships being held on Saturday October 29th.
Back to mile one in this one with it being too early to call in the top five.
Trumbull’s David Carillo, Simsbury’s Luke Davis, Xavier’s Alexander Ushchak, Glastonbury’s Harrison Krause, and Staples Ben Lorenz set a rather brisk pace heading to the end of mile one. After that it was a mass of humanity making their ways around with several racers passing each other and swapping places.

Among them in the middle was Colcho and Munoz. Three other Stratford racers entered into the varsity race had to settle for the back of the pack but certainly gained course experience.
The Taylor brothers, Kent and Jace, joined teammate Max Lilya in their first varsity Wickham Park encounter. They certainly took in the lessons to be learned on this course.
At the race's mid-way point it was the same five led by Lorenz.
In team play, the Danbury Hatters and the Cumberland High School Clippers, out of Rhode Island duking it out for the lead with Staples and Xavier along for the ride and staying within contention.
The final mile saw Lorenz with the lead, followed by Davis, Carillo, Ushchak, and Krause.
At the finish line Lorenz held the lead finishing in first at 15:56, followed by Davis at 16:07, and Carillo third at 16:11.
The crowd roared on the next two finishers where race officials at the finish line went to the videotape for spots four and five. Ushchak was given the decision for fourth place at 16:26 and Krause fifth at 16:26.
The Danbury Hatters took the top spot in team results by boasting five runners in the top twenty-five. Second place went to Staples and third place went to Xavier.

Colocho finished the day with a time of 18:10. Munoz finished in a time of 19:29. Kent Taylor came in at 22:24. Jace Taylor came in at 22:52 and Max Lilya finished in a time of 22:55.

Earlier in the afternoon three Stratford runners ran in the Junior Varsity race. Tops amongst the Stratford JV runners was Matt Kleszczewski at 25:57, Raiyan Khusru came in at 30:15, and Papa Insaidoo finished with a time of 33:46.
Up next for Stratford, Tuesday October 11th, 5:00, at Bunnell High School going against the Bulldogs, the Joel Barlow Falcons, and the Notre-Dame-Fairfield Lancers.
