Soap Shoplifting Suspect Fails to Make A Clean Getaway at Stop & Shop: Police

A Stratford man is accused of stealing more than $100 worth of soap from the Westport Stop & Shop, according to police.

WESTPORT, CT — A 45-year-old Stratford man allegedly tried to shoplift $123 worth of Dove soap last month from the Wesport Stop and Shop on the Post Road East, according to police.

The incident occurred on Nov. 14 at about 4:20 p.m. after the store's Loss Prevention Officer observed a man, later identified as Kristopher Flint, leaving the store without paying for the soap.

"Upon asking the suspect to step back inside, the suspect dropped the merchandise he was carrying and fled in a vehicle. The Loss Prevention Officer was able to provide the license plate number of the vehicle that the suspect left in as well as store surveillance footage which captured an image of the suspect," Westport police wrote in a statement.

The car was registered to Flint, who police said had been arrested in 2015 for a similar crime in Westport. "The investigating Officer compared Mr. Flint’s booking photo from the 2015 case with the male seen in the video surveillance footage from Stop & Shop taken in this case and found there was a match."

Police obtained an arrest warrant for Flint, and he was taken into custody by Stratford police and turned over to Westport authorities on Dec. 6. Flint was charged with sixth-degree Larceny and held in lieu of a $5,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in Norwalk Superior Court on December 16.
