Stratford's Square One Theatre Finds New Home
The theatre company features three plays this season and subscriptions are currently on sale.
Stratford’s Square One Theatre has found a new home at Stratford Academy at Johnson House, an arts magnets school located at 719 Birdseye Street.
Artistic Director Tom Holehan and Richard Pheneger, general manager of the 26-year-old theatre company, announced the news on Tuesday night.
The Johnson House is just over a mile beyond the Square One Theatre Company’s former location. Stratford Academy offers patrons plenty of free parking.

Holehan and Pheneger said in a press release that they are greatly indebted to Stratford Superintendent of Schools Dr. Janet Robinson, Stratford Academy principal Maureen Didomenico and Head Custodian Frank Kalakay for their invaluable assistance in providing this new space to the theatre which after 25 years had to vacate its Main Street theatre following the end of last season.
“It is only fitting that the Stratford School District that values arts education would partner with a theatre group,” Robinson said in a statement. “We are only happy to share our facility to host Square One Theatre and assist them in bringing great performances to the community.”

Stratford Academy’s expansive stage will be reconfigured into an intimate 64-seat black box-type theatre for Square One’s purposes. The audience will actually be seated (new padded chairs) on the stage, too, insuring that all patrons have a good seat to hear and see. With this redesigned, modern venue no audience member will be more than 15 feet from the stage.
The task of finding a new home took a year-long search involving Square One’s Management, Advisory Board Members as well as audience members suggesting and exploring potential area locations.
Management’s one and only stipulation about relocating was that the Theatre ‘must remain’ in Stratford.
