AT&T Announces 5G Coming To Fairfield County

AT&T will rollout 5G service to parts of Fairfield County in the coming weeks.

FAIRFIELD, CT — AT&T announced that it will roll out 5G coverage to parts of Fairfield County over the coming weeks.

Access to the service will be offered on the network's Unlimited Elite and Unlimited Extra plans. Access to the service requires a compatible device. The company will start preorders for the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 +5G smartphone on Nov. 25. It will be the first 5G device on the network geared toward consumers.

A February 2020 service map shows most of the greater Bridgeport area with 5G coverage along with the area around Stamford and other spots throughout the county.

The network is also being launched over low-band spectrum in Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, Providence, San Diego and Rochester, N.Y. among other spots.

“When we introduced the U.S. to 5G last year, we started with a business-first and experience-based strategy to lay the foundation for innovation to come,” said AT&T Consumer CEO Thaddeus Arroyo.“We’re now introducing consumers to the future of wireless with broad 5G service included in our best unlimited plans for 5G devices like the Samsung Galaxy Note10+ 5G.”

5G technology promises not only faster connection speeds, but also decreased latency and other benefits. Downloading a full movie on a phone could take seconds instead of minutes once the technology is fully implemented. Accessing it requires a 5G-enabled device, which as of now are limited.

Gov. Ned Lamont applauded AT&T's decision and said his administration will continue to work with AT&T and other networks to set up 5G infrastructure across the state.

"I want Connecticut to be ahead of the curve, and that’s why we’re working with our state’s telecommunications companies to deploy 5G service here," he said. "I applaud AT&T on this announcement today – they’re helping us in our efforts to build a Connecticut that has a reputation for being at the forefront of modern, technological advancements.”
