Two Gentlemen of Verona to Visit Stratford

The Hudson Shakespeare Company of New Jersey will perform its final summer Shakespeare production at the Stratford Library with the classic romance, Two Gentlemen of Verona on Saturday, August 22 at 2 pm. The company returned to Stratford for its tenth annual season last June with a program of three plays. The fully staged and costumed performance is free and open to the public.

Two Gentlemen of Verona is a romantic comedy about two best friends, Valentine and Proteus, who fall in love with the same woman. Set in a Renaissance time frame with Italian sword play and lively music, the love triangle is complicated by the fact that Proteus’ girlfriend, Julia, is miffed at Proteus for leaving her and falling for another woman. In typical Shakespeare fashion, she dresses up like a boy to chase after him. Complications, as they say, ensue.

The Hudson Shakespeare Company is now in its 24th season of touring Shakespeare and classical works in the tri-state region. At the Stratford Library, performances are held outside in the Library’s amphitheatre and patrons are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets to spread. In the event of inclement weather or extreme heat, the play will move inside to the air-conditioned Lovell Room.
