Veterans Day Sanitation Schedule Announced In Stratford

Officials announce the schedule for trash collection and the transfer station on Veterans Day.

Stratford residents will have uninterrupted refuse, recycling and yard waste collection on Veterans Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11, according to the Town of Stratford. The Public Works Sanitation Division will work the holiday, but the Transfer Station on Watson Boulevard will be closed.

The town's notices also remind residents that only refuse and recycling inside town-issued 96- or 64-gallon containers will be collected. Bags, cardboard and other refuse or recycling left beside the containers will not be picked up. Paint, oil and other liquids must not go in either container.

Plastic bags are prohibited in recycling containers, including bags sold specifically for recycling, according to the town. The notices explain that bags get stuck in sorting equipment, causing entire truckloads to be rejected as contaminated.

Accepted yard waste includes grass, leaves in paper bags or cans, and branches no longer than 4 feet and no more than 1 inch in diameter. Branches must be tied in bundles or placed in the bags or cans. Plastic bags, plastic planters, dirt and rocks will not be collected.

The last day of seasonal yard waste collection will be Monday, Dec. 21, with collection resuming in April, according to the town. During the winter, residents may bring yard waste to the Transfer Station on Watson Boulevard.
