Suffield Opens Cooling Sites

Dangerous heat and humidity are expected July 1-4, and town officials are urging residents to plan ahead before the holiday closures.

SUFFIELD, CT — Suffield officials are warning residents to prepare for several days of dangerous heat and humidity, with heat index values potentially climbing into the 100s from Wednesday, July 1, through Saturday, July 4.

The town urged residents to limit outdoor activity, stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight when possible and check on older adults, children, neighbors and pets.

Residents looking for an air-conditioned place to cool down may use the following town buildings during normal operating hours:

The Town of Suffield Senior Center will be open Wednesday and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The center will be closed Friday for the holiday.

Kent Memorial Library will be open Wednesday and Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. The library will be closed Friday and Saturday for the holiday.

Town officials said residents who may need accommodations for Friday or Saturday should make preparations now.

The warning comes as WFSB is forecasting the second heat wave of the year, with hot and humid conditions expected to build through the week. WFSB said Wednesday through Sunday are First Alert Weather Days because of the dangerous combination of heat and humidity, especially for people who work outside or are vulnerable to heat-related illness.

WFSB reported the worst of the combined heat and humidity is expected Thursday and Friday, when inland temperatures could reach 95 to 100 degrees or higher. Afternoon heat index values could reach 100 to 110 degrees, according to the station.

Record heat is possible Thursday in the Hartford area, where WFSB is forecasting a high near 101 degrees. The existing record for July 2 is 99 degrees, set in 1966.

Residents who need help finding additional cooling resources may call 211. For additional assistance, residents may contact the Suffield emergency management director at 860-668-3881. After hours, residents may call the Suffield Police Department routine line at 860-668-3870.
