Oranges and Woodpeckers

A short piece on watching and waiting for birds.

I decided to place a few pieces of oranges positioned around suet feeders to attract maybe one Baltimore Oriole. I was peeking continuously between chores to observe the feeders during the cloudy and damp weather.

Surprise! What appeared to be a male, red-bellied woodpecker was enjoying a little orange. By the time the camera was fetched, mywoodpecker friend was gone.

Disappointed, the days marched on until this Tuesday, 5/25/2011 when the sun shined. I was enjoying a cup of coffee at around 9:30 a.m. with my camera at the ready. Telescopic
adjustment was set, waiting. The woodpecker arrived, enjoyed the suet and departed. Oh! Disappointed again, but happy to see the red-headed bird, a second cup of java was in order.  Yes, the woodpecker returned and yes, finally a picture and a moment of sunshine on a beautiful Tuesday in the Town of Suffield.
