Notable accomplishments by college students who reside in Suffield.

SUFFIELD, CT — Here are some recent notable accomplishments by local college students, as provided by readMedia Newswire.

Assumption College, Worcester MA

  • Mariah Peck, of Suffield, was one of 78 students selected to present an original academic research project at Assumption College's 24th Annual Undergraduate Symposium, held April 23-24 on the College's Worcester campus. The Undergraduate Symposium showcases the academic research and scholarly achievements of Assumption students working in collaboration with dedicated faculty mentors. These collaborations represent a model for integrating teaching, original research, and the beneficial effects of peer review in promoting intellectual development and professional growth. The symposium provides the campus community with the opportunity to gain a greater appreciation of and applaud the individual and collective accomplishments of the College's faculty and students. Peck, a member of the Class of 2018, presented "Fiction and Affect." Fiction reading involves simulations of social and emotional environments, which are appealing to readers for a variety of reasons. Peck's research focused on how different genres of fiction may be differentially interesting for readers because of the way each genre may facilitate readers' ability to escape into the story, experience the characters' emotions, and learn something new from the book.

  • Two soccer players from Eastern Connecticut State University received the Holly E. Zimmerman Memorial Award this spring 2018 semester. The award was established in memory of the late Holly Zimmerman, and highlights students who make significant contributions to Eastern on and off the field.
One of the awardees was Michele D'Agata of West Suffield, who majors in Sport & Leisure Management. D'Agata was a four-year letterwinner with the women's soccer team. D'Agata has excelled both in the classroom and on the field for four years. She has been named to the Dean's List every semester, while also being selected to the Little East Conference All-Academic Team in all three years of her eligibility. She has twice been named an E-Club Outstanding Scholar-Athlete. On the field, Coach Chris D'Ambrosio noted that D'Agata, a four-year starter at midfield and back, was a great leader who led by example with her work ethic and her willingness to take the time to work with younger teammates and use her experience as an upperclassman to help them as both athletes and as students.
