CAPT Scores Up, CMT Scores Mixed For Suffield Schools

Standardized test scores are in for Suffield, and the district saw gains in CAPT scores, with mixed results for CMTs. Scores still exceed state averages.

The Connecticut Department of Education released the Connecticut Academic Performance Test (CAPT) and the Connecticut Mastery Test (CMT) scores for all Connecticut school districts on Tuesday. 

On the CAPT test, which is given to 10th graders, Suffield students improved a few points in reading and writing and stayed the same in math and science. More than 76 percent of students reached goal in math (up from 69), 70 percent in science (up from 65), 71 percent in reading (up from 67) and 76 percent in writing (down from 79).

However, the CMTs were a different story, with more scores staying the same or showing a slight decline. 

One significant drop is seen in the area of fourth-grade writing, 90.5 percent meeting goal in 2012 to just 74.9 percent and a similar drop in fifth-grade writing, from 79 percent to 68 percent at goal. 

Significant drops were seen in math and science in a few grades. 

The CMTs are administered to all students from grade three to grade eight. Students are tested in math, reading and writing, and in middle school, they are tested in science as well.

Students are labeled based on their performance. The labels, in descending order, are advanced, goal, proficient, basic and below basic.
