Championship Saturday Results: 16 Titlists Crowned

State championship matchups in field hockey, soccer, volleyball and swimming were conducted across Connecticut Saturday.

From Wethersfield to Waterbury to West Haven, Championship Saturday brought out the best in Connecticut high school sports, as 16 champions were crowned in field hockey, boys and girls soccer, girls volleyball and girls swimming.

Some facts and figures following Championship Saturday:

  • Three schools won multiple state titles Saturday - Daniel Hand (field hockey, boys soccer), St. Joseph (girls soccer, girls volleyball) and Greenwich (girls volleyball, girls swimming).
  • Five No. 1 seeds emerged victorious, while two others settled for runner-up status.
  • Three teams won their third straight state title - St. Joseph girls soccer, Old Lyme girls soccer and Greenwich girls swimming. Staples field hockey, Daniel Hand boys soccer and RHAM girls volleyball each won championships for the second straight season.
  • Just one of the 16 champions - Ridgefield girls soccer - was a first-time winner. By contrast, Greenwich won the girls swimming State Open for the 18th time, while Coventry girls volleyball (11 titles) and Glastonbury boys soccer (10) are also in double figures.
