CT Senator Asks FDA to Ban Powdered Caffeine

The FDA has issued a warning about pure caffeine products, but Blumenthal says that's not enough.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal has called on the Food and Drug Administration to keep powdered caffeine away from the public.

The senator held a news conference Thursday at Southern Connecticut State University to discuss the issue, and he said caffeine is both dangerous and easily accessible, according to the New Haven Register.

Concern has grown since an Ohio teenager died from a caffeine overdose in May. The FDA released a statement saying it is aware of the death and it is seeking more information before deciding if regulation is necessary.

The administration also issued a warning about the consumption of pure caffeine, but Blumenthal said during the conference that the warning is not enough, and more should be done to protect the public from overdosing on caffeine.
