Former Suffield Resident and Patron of the Arts Marcia P. Alcorn Passes Away at 87

Services will be held Monday, June 29.

Marcia P. Alcorn, who was known as “Gaga,” of Nashua, NH and formerly of Suffield, beloved wife of the late Hugh Meade Alcorn, passed away Monday, June 22, 2015 in Nashua, NH. She was 87.

Born November 29, 1927 in Hartford daughter of the late Marselis and Anna (Lynch) Powell.

A graduate of Hartford College for Women, her major interest was in theater, beginning with acting in summer stock at the Somers Playhouse in Somers. She was a regular panelist on the Channel 3 (Hartford) television program “What In The World.” She was a founding member of the Hartford Stage; a long-time member of the Connecticut Commission on the Arts for which she served as chair for several terms. She was a founding member of the New England Foundation for the arts and served as its president. She also served on the theater panel of the National Endowment for the arts. She was a board member of The William Benton Museum at the University of Connecticut and a board member of the Hartt School of Music at the University of Hartford.

In addition to local charitable work, she was on the board of the Hartford National Bank (later Shawmut National).

Marcia is survived by her daughter, Eileen A. Van Law of Nashua, NH; three grandchildren, James Van Law and his wife Marie of Charleston, SC, Janet Moses and her husband Brian of Merrimack, NH Jennifer Wells Thibeault of Amherst, NH; seven great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Marie Van Law, Emily Sarah Van Law, Hannah Rose Van Law of Charleston, SC, Cora Wells Thibeault, Zachary James Thibeault of Amherst, NH, Hayden Ryan Moses and Peyton Kingston Moses of Merrimack, NH.

She was predeceased by a son-in-law, James Van Law and two brothers, Richard and Peter Powell.

Special thanks to all the staff at Nashua Crossing and Compassionate Care. A graveside service will be held Monday, June 29, 2015, 1 PM, at Woodlawn Cemetery, Bridge Street, Suffield.
