Mass Layoffs Hit Major Suffield Employer

C&S Wholesalers will conduct mass layoffs at its Suffield facility.

SUFFIELD, CT — C&S Wholesale Services, Inc., will conduct mass layoffs, according to documents filed with the state Department of Labor. The layoffs at the 1120 Harvey Lane facility will occur in January.

"As... a result of certain decisions of its customers, the Company anticipates the permanent lay-off of a number of employees at the Facility," the company wrote in the document filed with the state.

The move affects 175 employees at the warehouse facility.

A Town of Suffield official told The Journal Inquirer that the company was reacting to a move by Stop & Shop to handle its own warehouse and distribution. The grocery chain accounts for about 85% of C&S's business at the Suffield facility.

C&S Wholesalers is a national supplier of grocery stores and has locations around the country. The company's Suffield facility is about 660,000, and is one of the largest commercial buildings in town, according to The Journal-Inquirer.
