Suffield Parks & Recreation Announces Free Spring Hiking Workshop at Sunrise Park

Are you looking to enjoy the outdoors and Celebrate Spring, 250th History and St. Patrick’s Weekend all in one fun event?

You and your friends and family are invited to lace up your hiking shoes and celebrate community, history, and the outdoors as the Suffield Parks & Recreation Department partners with Reach Your Summit to host a free Spring Hiking & Workshop on Saturday, March 21, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Sunrise Park’s Upper Pavilion.

This enjoyable event will blend outdoor recreation with local history and community connection during a special St. Patrick’s Day weekend gathering.

Participants will have the opportunity to walk a portion of the historic New England Trail — formerly known as the Metacomet Trail — a route once traveled by Native peoples and early colonists. The hike and workshop is designed for all ages and abilities, offering multiple hiking options and an educational mini-workshop.

Hike leaders include Mat Jobin, owner of Reach Your Summit, Donna Carney-Bastrzycki, Director of Special Programs, and Suffield Parks & Recreation volunteer Stephan Bastrzycki-owner of Planet Zero Gravity.

Attendees may choose from a beginner-friendly walk or a moderate hike featuring the Whites Pond Loop with an optional out-and-back segment on the New England Trail. A short workshop will also cover practical skills such as spring layering techniques, trail safety, and outdoor photography tips.

Light snacks will be provided, and participants are encouraged to bring water, hiking shoes, layered clothing.

The workshop will take place at Sunrise Park’s Upper Pavilion, and families, individuals, and community members of all experience levels are encouraged to participate.
