Suffield Fire Department Releases Details on Friday's Rescue
A mobility-challenged man was rescued from his burning home Friday.

SUFFIELD, CT — Fire officials have released details about the rescue of a local man from a house fire Friday.
On its Facebook page, the Suffield Fire Department provided a detailed narrative about the circumstances of Friday's fire on Boston Neck Road.
Around 6:55 Friday morning, the Suffield Fire Department responded to a Lifeline activation from the occupant of 567 Boston Neck Road, reporting a fire in his residence. Firefighter Colby Tyler was completing his shift and Lt. Kevin Seger, who was reporting for his shift along with his son, Cadet Justin Seger, responded with Engine 1 from the center station.

Arriving on scene at approximately 7 a.m., Lt. Seger reported heavy black smoke showing from the rear of the structure and requested mutual aid from the Windsor Locks and Enfield fire departments. Having firsthand knowledge of the residence and of the occupant’s limited mobility, he began his initial size up at the rear of the structure, where he heard the occupant calling for help. Lt. Seger entered the rear door into the kitchen; due to the opaque nature of the smoke, which at the time was banked down to the floor, he had difficulty locating the victim. He assumed a crawling position, proceeded without a hose line for his personal protection, approximately five to eight feet into the kitchen, and located the victim.
Lt. Seger successfully removed the victim to the rear door as Tyler was beginning to deploy the fire attack line through the same rear door. Tyler and Lt. Seger completed the removal of the victim to the rear porch, a quick assessment of the victim was conducted, Suffield EMS personnel rendered appropriate levels of care and the victim was transported to St. Francis Hospital.
