Suffield Golfer Earns College Accolades

The freshman earned his first weekly award from the Liberty League.

TROY, NY — Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute student-athlete Austin Rupp of Suffield has been selected as the Liberty League Men's Golf Performer of the Week, the first weekly award for the freshman.

Rupp earned medalist honors to lead the Engineers to a second place finish at the 2017 Saratoga National Invitational over the weekend. He backed up his first round 70 (-2) with an even par 72 second round on Sunday to beat out Jeffrey Giguere of Middlebury College and Grant Raffel of Williams College by a single stroke each. Rupp had four birdies on Sunday, including three on the front nine, and was above par on just three of 18 holes. The industrial and management engineering major made six birdies on Saturday - three on each side.

In five tournaments this season, Rupp shot in the 70s in each round, averaging 74.5 strokes per. In addition to his 70 and 72 in Saratoga, he had a 71 on September 11 and a 73 on September 23.

Rupp played four years of varsity golf at Suffield High School, serving as a captain for three seasons. He was a three-time All-State selection and a four-time All-Conference honoree. He won the individual state championship as a senior, leading the school to the state title. A three-time team Most Valuable Player, Rupp and his teammates won four league championships.

In addition to golf, he also played hockey, registering more than 100 career points while earning All-State and All-Conference with two conference championships and a state title (2015).

Rensselaer has concluded its fall schedule and resumes play in the spring.
