Suffield Obituary: Muriel Deck, 91

Muriel Madeline (Whalen) Deck, 91, of West Hartford, died on Tuesday, February 13, 2018.

Born in Springfield, MA, daughter of the late William and Beatrice (Grover) Whalen, she was raised in Suffield, where she attended local schools. Upon graduation, she was employed by the Springfield Newspaper and First National Bank of Suffield. She then graduated from the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in 1950 and joined the Army Nurse Corp., serving in Kyoto, Japan with the 8164AU and the TD4 at Camp Zoma.

In Tokyo, Japan during the Korean War. Muriel spent her last years in nursing as Head Nurse of Pediatrics at St. Francis Hospital. She was a member of the St. Francis Hospital Retirees Club and the West Hartford Grandparents Wisdom Circle.

She leaves her five daughters, Karen Freda, Kathy Sweeney, Norma Deck, Theresa Burby of West Hartford and Patricia Rioux of St. George Utah, seven grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.

All funeral services will be private. Newington Memorial Funeral Home, 20 Bonair Ave., Newington is serving her family.
