Suffield Obituary: Robert Dowling, 86

Condolences to his family and friends.

Robert “Bob” H. Dowling, of Suffield and formerly of Old Saybrook and Simsbury, died July 17, 2017.

Born in Naugatuck, June 6, 1931, he was the son of the late Raymond P. and Evelyn (Daly) Dowling.

He leaves his wife of 62 years, Mary (Derwin) Dowling; his loving children Brian and his wife Susan of Winsted and Susan of Suffield; and his four grandchildren Siena, Anton, Maria, and Rebecca. He was predeceased by his daughter Catherine. He also leaves a brother Donald of Seattle, WA and many Daly cousins that were all so dear to him. He was also predeceased by his brother Raymond in June of 2017.

Bob was raised in Naugatuck, attended Saint Francis Grade School and Naugatuck High School. He graduated from Fairfield University in 1954 and was drafted into the US Army where he served in the in the Headquarters Company of the US Army in Washington, DC.

He was employed for 25 years for the Hartford Insurance Company where he enjoyed the opportunity to travel and live in many parts of the United States.Bob loved his “Irishness”, Irish music, and his many trips to Ireland. He was best described as “Quiet in manner and firm in reality”.

He had an amazing command of English grammar, vocabulary, and delighted many with his delightful letters and poetry. He was also talented at needlework; enjoying crewel the most. He had a great love of sports for his entire life; especially enjoying golf and baseball. He will be loved and sadly missed always.

Family and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial, Saturday, August 12, 2017, 10 am directly at Sacred Heart Church, 446 Mountain Road. Suffield. There are no calling hours.
