
Thomas John O’Malley, 91, beloved husband of Laverne (Twarkins) O’Malley for 57 years passed away on Friday, August 25, 2017, surrounded by his family.
Tom was born in Windsor on March 22, 1926, the son of the late Thomas Francis O’Malley and Rose (Cunningham) O’Malley. He lived in Suffield for the last thirty-three years, after spending most of his life and career in Windsor. Tom was a graduate of Loomis Chaffee School, and proudly served his country during WWII in the US Navy.
He graduated from Yale University and Georgetown Law School, and was admitted to practice law in Connecticut in 1954. He was a founding partner of the law firm O’Malley, Deneen, Leary, Messina & Oswecki in Windsor, served as Prosecutor and Judge of the Windsor Municipal Court, and was Commissioner of the Metropolitan District Commission for 15 years. He retired in 2004 after a successful fifty-year career.

Tom was an active civic member of numerous organizations, including the Connecticut, Hartford and Windsor Bar Associations, Windsor Federal Savings and Loan Association, Windsor Economic Development Commission, Windsor Democratic Town Committee, Windsor Charter Revision Commission, St. Gabriel’s Church Council, Connecticut Petroleum Production Control Commission, Connecticut Energy Advisory Board, Greater Hartford Transit District, Suffield Charter Revision Commission and the Suffield Board of Assessment Appeals. He also served as the Suffield Town Attorney.
Tom married Laverne Twarkins on November 7, 1959, with whom he shared the joy of raising their five children: Kim and her husband John Hipp of Houston, Texas; Donna and her husband David Allen of Danville, Vermont; John and his wife Clare of Suffield; Paul and his wife Tricia of Randolph, New Jersey; and Sheila and her husband Patrick Fitzgerald of Loudonville, New York. He took great pride in his thirteen grandchildren: Caitlin and Christopher Hipp; Kalin and Solenne Thompson; Patrick, Dermott and Maura O’Malley; Lauren, Gregory and Meghan O’Malley; Madeleine, Julia and John Fitzgerald; and two great-grandchildren, Miel Kelly and Rowan Stevens.

Tom instilled the importance of a strong work ethic and a solid education in all his children. He was an avid gardener, landscaper, hunter, and fisherman. He and Laverne enjoyed vacation travel and holiday gatherings with their ever-growing family.
The O’Malley family will receive friends Tuesday, August 29, 2017 from 4-7 PM at Nicholson & Carmon Funeral Home, 443 East St. N. (Rt. 159), Suffield. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, August 30, 2017, 10:00 AM at Sacred Heart Church, 446 Mountain Rd., Suffield. Burial with military honors will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Windsor Locks.
