Suffield School Panel Backs Science Curriculum Changes, Reviews Music Scheduling

Suffield’s school curriculum subcommittee favored new elementary science and preschool resources and reviewed possible music scheduling changes at its meeting Friday, Oct. 23. According to minutes published by the Town of Suffield, the science plan would introduce OpenSciEd units in grades three through five beginning in 2027-28.

A pilot unit had positive results and aligned well with Next Generation Science Standards, according to the minutes. The plan calls for one unit in each grade in 2027-28, followed by one in grade three and possibly two in grades four and five in 2028-29. The minutes list $26,000 for science kits, a $10,000 Title IV grant offset and a separate $6,000 professional development cost. Future budgets would need to cover consumable materials.

The committee requested updates on implementation and fifth-grade science standards scores, which the minutes describe as unfavorable over the past few years. It also favored purchasing Heggerty preschool materials for $636.05, likely a one-time expense. That resource uses a sounds-first approach to support phonemic awareness.

Growing symphonic band enrollment could require two sections in 2027-28, according to the minutes. That would likely mean offering existing Advanced Placement and Early College Experience fine arts courses every other year for contractual reasons. Music staff are also exploring scheduling options for Jazz Ensemble, which carries 0.2 credits and meets after school, because attendance is challenging for students in other after-school programs. Staff will provide updates on any scheduling or credit changes.
