West Suffield Woman Attempts to Escape From Prison

She was caught trying to climb a perimeter fence at the York Correctional Institution in East Lyme, state police said.

EAST LYME, CT — An inmate at the York Correctional Institution attempted to escape Tuesday morning, but was captured without making it outside the perimeter fence, a state police spokesperson said.

Caitlin Rancalli, 24, whose last listed address was on Babbs Road in West Suffield, gained access outside of the housing units to the prisoner yard, then made her way to the perimeter fence and began to climb, according to Trooper First Class Kelly Grant.

Prison staff members observed the escape attempt and notified yard staff, who detained Rancalli without further incident. Command staff contacted Troop E of the Connecticut State Police at 6:13 a.m., and Rancalli was charged with first-degree escape from a correctional institution.
