Young Men Arrested in Separate DUI Cases in Suffield

One case involved a crash, the other an excessive amount of speed.

SUFFIELD, CT — Suffield police took two young men into custody over the holiday weekend in separate cases involving operating motor vehicles under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

Late Friday, police responded to a two-vehicle crash on East Street South, and arrested an Enfield resident. Ira Smith, 21, was charged with operating under the influence, operating without a license and driving too close. He was released on a $7,500 nonsurety bond.

Early Sunday morning just after 2 a.m., a police sergeant on patrol observed a vehicle traveling in excess of 90 mph on North Street, and recognized it as one police in neighboring Agawam, Mass. had attempted to stop just moments prior. The sergeant stopped the vehicle moments later.

Cameron Lanza, 20, of Agawam, was charged with operating under the influence, reckless driving and refual to submit to test. He was released on $5,000 nonsurety bond.

Both men are scheduled to appear in Enfield Superior Court Jan. 23.
