Driver Trapped In Car Under Downed Tree In East Haddam

EAST HADDAM, CT — Firefighters rescued a driver who was trapped in their car under a downed tree in East Haddam early Thursday morning, fire officials said.

Firefighters were dispatched to Sipples Hill on a report of a one-car accident at 4:42 a.m.

Fire Chief Brian Auld was on the way to work when he came upon the accident. There was a person in the car who was conscious and alert but "heavily entrapped."

Fire officials determined that the car had "proceeded under a downed tree that had fallen across the roadway."

Firefighters were able to remove the person from the car. The driver was then hospitalized.

Route 149 was closed for an extended time Mott Lane and Eli Chapman Road.
