KILLINGWORTH, CT — Haddam has opened a new, daily food scrap drop-off site, Killingworth tests its vote tabulators in public, and the clock is ticking on voter registration across all three towns ahead of the Nov. 3 election.

1. Haddam Opens Daily Food Scrap Drop-Off Site
When: Open every day; began Oct. 1
Where: Shed near the Social Services office, 11 Jail Hill Road, Haddam
What to know: A state Sustainable Materials Management grant is letting Haddam expand its food scrap program with a new drop-off shed open daily to all residents. The town said the most common complaint was trouble getting to the transfer station. The shed holds six 32-gallon Blue Earth Compost bins. Because Blue Earth charges for every bin with any scraps in it, residents are asked to fill one bin completely before starting the next. Once all six are full, use the transfer station's food scrap site. No plastic or biodegradable bags are allowed, and users must lock the shed door when they leave. Free starter kits (a countertop bin, a transport bin and compostable bags) and free food-scrap-only transfer station passes are available at the tax office. The scraps go to an anaerobic digester in Southington that makes compost and biogas. Questions go to Kristin Battistoni at 860-345-8531, ext. 206.
