Here are the top three stories today in The Haddams-Killingworth:
- What could be more fun that a cardboard boat race? The East Haddam Leo Club will be hosting The Annual Cardboard Boat Race on August 9 at the Town Beach. The Leos welcome and challenge you to build your very own cardboard boat! Add in your own style by decorating and dressing up to your own theme. You can choose anything from pirates to princesses to movie stars. Finally, get ready to prove your boat worthy in the Battle of the Boats Race! Be prepared to paddle it out or go down in a spectacular splash. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. at the East Haddam Town Beach (291 East Haddam Colchester Tpke, East Haddam). The first race begins at 9 a.m. The "Battle of the Boats" will take place after the races. The object is to be the last boat in the water. For more information please contact, easthaddamleos@gmail.com. (Cardboard Boat Race)
- On Saturday, July 9, The East Haddam Lions will hold its annual Auction and Tag Sale. The Tag Sale begins at 8 a.m. and the Auction kicks off at 10 a.m. This event is held every July and reportedly, between the auction and the tag sale, the Lions raise well over $10,000 each year. The money is returned to the East Haddam community in the form of scholarships, food bank donations, etc. A multitude of volunteer hours are expended to make this great event possible. If you're looking for quality furniture, lightly used tools/mowers/etc. or a cheap vehicle - the auction will get you the best bang for your buck. It's also a great community event, and a great way to spend a Saturday morning while supporting a good cause. Hope to see you there! (East Haddam Lions Club via Facebook)
- According to a CT Post article, “Woodland folly” is not a frequently-used term, but a Colonial-style home in East Haddam brings that phrase back into use with the one that exists in its backyard. Located in the hamlet of Hadlyme, the 12 River Road home has a folly in its backyard, which is defined as “a nonessential building that often serves as a garden focal point or eye-catcher,” according to Flower Magazine." The home also has a bevy of other highlights and is listed for $2.8 million. Check it out! (CTPost)
