Beware of Phishing Scams

A recent incident in Higganum prompts a warning from the Resident Troopers' Office.

Phishing Scams are the act of pursuing personal information in an attempt to steal someone's identity. A scam can occur in the form of electronic mail, other online activity, phone calls, or show up on your front door in the form of a note.

According to Resident State Trooper Enrico Milardo, a Higganum resident came close to becoming a victim of one of these scams.

An unknown person(s) left a note with instructions to call Chase Bank on the front door of a home in Higganum. The note provided a 1-800 number, was printed in English and Spanish and requested that the person call with an account number ready (see photo of the note).

Milardo would like to remind residents that it is never wise to respond to a request that asks you to call any bank and release personal information.

He continues that “anyone receiving phone calls asking about college SAT prep, it is most likely another scam. Do not release any information over the phone to anyone calling about SAT prep.”

If you ever receive a similar note like the one in Haddam, or notice any suspicious vehicles or persons in or around your neighborhood, you are asked to contact the Haddam Resident Troopers' Office at 860-345-2769 or the Connecticut State Police, Troop F in Westbrook at 860-399-2100.

In East Haddam, you may contact the East Haddam Resident Troopers' Office at 860-873-1226 or the Connecticut State Police, Troop K at 860-537-7500.

This particular “note” scam is not something new and is just another way in which scammers are attempting to obtain personal information from potentially unsuspecting victims.
