Bats: Where Have They Gone?

Connecticut's bats need our help to win their battle against White Nose Syndrome (WNS). Find out what you can do to help.

Bats play a vital role in our local ecosystem and the overall health of our planet.  Unfortunately, they are dying off by the thousands in the caves where they hibernate. The cause is a mysterious disease known as White-Nose Syndrome (WNS). So far, there is no cure. In some cases, 100% of Little Brown Bats -- major predators of mosquitoes -- have died due to WNS. Little Brown Bats are one of the species of bats in Connecticut that are threatened.

You can help researchers in their efforts to help bats by taking part in the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (D.E.E.P) 2011 Public Bat Survey.

To download information and survey forms, go to the web site of the Connecticut River Estuary Regional Planning Agency at:  http://www.crerpa.org/bats.html

In subsequent blogs I will be providing more information on bats. Please  post a comment if you would like more information on helping out on the survey. Perhaps your church or organization would like to help out. I am providing a leaflet of the information posted here that you can print out and give to friends or post locally.
