Haddam and Killingworth Resident Troopers Ticket Minors at the Haddam Neck Fair for Underage Drinking
Haddam and Killingworth Resident Troopers and Troopers from Troop F worked with staff from the Healthy Communities-Healthy Kids Coalition, an initiative of Youth & Family Services of Haddam-Killingworth Inc., to help reduce underage drinking at the Haddam Neck Fair. The Haddam Neck Fair is known by minors as an easy place to consume alcohol. The coalition is working to prevent and reduce underage drinking in Haddam and Killingworth.
On Friday, September 2, 2011, coalition staff walked around the Haddam Neck Fair with Troopers to locate and ticket underage drinkers. Through this initiative
Troopers were able to ticket four underage drinkers and two adults for allowing
minors to possess alcohol. Minors, who received the $136 infraction for
underage drinking, told Troopers they received their alcohol from adults who
purchased the alcohol for them. It is illegal for adults to purchase or provide
alcohol to minors or allow minors to possess alcohol. According to the
Connecticut’s Social Host Law, not only is it against the law for minors to
consume alcohol, but it is illegal for minors to possess alcohol on public or
private property.
This program is fundedby the Office of National Drug Control Policy and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration through the Drug Free Communities Support Grant. The Healthy Communities-Healthy Kids Coalition is a substance abuse prevention coalition made up of dedicated community member volunteers in an effort to change policy, educate, and implement strategies to prevent and reduce substance abuse, other risky behavior, and to promote the wellness of the community.
