The Memorial Day weekend was a busy one for the Haddam Volunteer Fire Co. It started early in the morning on Saturday, May 26th, with a motorcycle roll-over on Killingworth Road. The operator was removed from under the large machine, decontaminated from fuel that had leaked, and was transported to Middlesex Hospital.
Later that same day, Firefighters responded to a two vehicle crash at the intersection of the Route 82 Connector and Saybrook Road. Several hours later, following a thunder storm, Haddam Firefighters were called to assist the East Haddam Fire Department at the scene of a structure fire on Clark Gates Road. Haddam’s tanker and an engine with manpower responded and helped for several hours.
Just before midnight Saturday, May 26th, Haddam Fire sent Tanker 2-13 to East Hampton to assist with the Belvin Road factory structure fire. Along with approximately 20 other tankers, water was hauled until 6:30am. The building was considered a total loss and is believed to have been started by a lightening strike during the storm earlier in the day. During the East Hampton fire, additional Firefighters responded to Route 9 for a rollover where the sole occupant was ejected. She was treated on scene, and then transported via Haddam Ambulance and a Middlesex Hospital Paramedic to Hartford Hospital.
Monday, Memorial Day, Firefighters began at approximately 4:00am getting ready for the annual activities. A crew began making clam chowder, a traditional refreshment served after the parade. Others readied trucks and prepared to assist with traffic control. During the parade, Firefighters and EMS personnel dealt with several heat related emergencies that affected marchers.
Peter Brown and Mike Sapia have successfully completed their Probationary Period and are now Firefighters.
A tremendous amount of training took place over the past month. Mike Sapia completed his Firefighter I certification. Steve Bates, Jesse Drake, Rob Goldfarb, Aaron Rigono and Kyle Vallera completed their Firefighter II certification. Lieutenant Dan Sullivan is now certified as a Fire Service Instructor. In addition, 10 members completed a 10 hour training course on Haddam Fire Extrication Equipment and are now qualified to operate at scenes of motor vehicle crashes or other extrication emergency calls.
Training drills included structure fire operations at a vacant structure, and a combined marine emergency/off-road vehicle evolutions.
It’s not too late to join the Haddam Volunteer Fire Co. and be eligible to take the Firefighter I course being hosted at our Station #1 beginning in late summer. Please call the main information line (860-345-4945) and leave a message for the Membership Committee.
