House District #34 Farmer's Markets! ~ East Haddam, East Hampton, part of Colchester
Did you know that each of the three towns comprising the 34th District each have a great public market once per week?
In the newly configured district we have an abundant local food supply. Many small local farms are producing high quality vegetables, livestock, eggs, and cheese….the list could go on and on! Did you know that each of the three towns comprising the 34th District each have a great public market once per week?
The East Hampton Farmer’s Market is Saturday from 9-1, East Haddam’s is Wednesday from 4-7 and Colchester’s is Sunday from 9-1. I was lucky to get a chance to finally to go to all three and we are lucky to have dedicated folks who organize these special venues. It is not just about going there and buying a tomato, it is just as important to connect with your community, know where your food is coming from and of course supporting local. Each market is at its peak right now and you are bound to find all kinds of things from jams and jellies, spices, yarn and even a package of frozen hamburgers!
It is critically important to shop local whenever you can. As a former economic development coordinator and business advocate I support all our small businesses and the owners that dedicate so much time to their success and employ our neighbors and friends. There are other options for local produce as well---for instance Pauls and Sandy’s in East Hampton, Staehly's in East Haddam have produce available. Lake Hayward Farm has a great little farm stand that operates on the honor system 24/7. A little further outside the 34th is a great stand run by East Haddam residents: Panfili Farm Stand is just up the road from Salem Valley Farms. It is a must browse shop! Their baked goods are fabulous.

When the local markets close you have another option for locally grown food that delivers! Please check out Farm Fresh Express. Here you can support many of the small local farms along the CT River Valley. Owner Deb Marsden is dedicated to locally grown food and other resources. The website works like Peapod. Tell her I sent you!
You can find other markets if you live outside our district. The Farmer's Market Trail gives you a options of other public farmer's markets around. Check them out and you will also learn of another unique offering--Farm Dinner Series. These are often sold-out long in advance.
Happy Market Hopping!!
