There has been an understandable confusion over how important the primary election actually is. Many people have considered it as little more than a race between party Candidate A vs. party Candidate B with little difference between them, but it is much more important than that. The fact is, each of these candidates will be bringing their own particular philosophies and outlooks on different political issues to their particular offices, which in turn will determine what type of political representation you will receive from that office.

To show what that means, on the Republican slate for United States Senator we have two candidates; current office holder Christopher Shays and Republican Party endorsed Linda McMahon. Using the political issue of gun control as an example, Christopher Shays has shown in his voting record that he favors stricter gun control laws, while Linda McMahon has publicly stated she is a strong supporter of the Second Amendment. Therefore, you can see your vote will decide the type of representation you will receive on that issue from these candidates, so you should cast your vote according to the type of representation you yourself want to have.

There is no “right” candidate and there is no “wrong” candidate for these offices.  There is only the candidate that best represents your own stances on the political issues that are important to you. Considering the many other issues that face us all- the economy, taxation, jobs, and others- it makes your vote in the primary that much more important because the primary is your endorsement for which candidate will be sent to the general elections in November, so your vote will directly impact how the November elections will turn out.

So, please take the time today and cast an informed vote for the candidate you feel is the best representation for these offices.  It is not only a right as a citizen of a free nation; it also is a responsibility to the free nation we want to have.
