Carbon Monoxide Kills Pets At Killingworth Home

KILLINGWORTH, CT — Carbon monoxide poisoning killed pets in a residence on Laurel Ridge Trail Monday, officials said.

State police and the local fire department responded to the residence, at 92 Laurel Ridge Trail, around 4:52 p.m.

A resident had returned home and encountered an odor in the residence, according to police dispatch.

Police did not disclose the type or number of animals. No humans were injured in the incident, police said.

Fire officials assessed the house and aired out the carbon monoxide, and the scene was cleared about an hour later. No criminal element is suspected, state police said.

First Selectman Eric Couture said the town’s volunteer fire company strongly suspects a faulty furnace did not properly ignite, causing the carbon monoxide to build up in the residence.

“With the colder weather coming, people should take steps to confirm that their heating systems are functioning properly,” Couture said.
