Colchester Man Pleads Guilty to Using a Fake U.S. Marshals Badge

John W. Carroll, of Colchester, will serve a period of probation for the crime.

A 42-year-old Colchester man will serve three years of probation for illegally possessing a fake United States Marshals Service badge.

John W. Carroll pleaded guilty in federal court on Feb. 20 to the offense and was sentenced Wednesday to three-year probationary period.

Probation, which is agreed upon in lieu of jail time, typically means he has to comply with a series of court-mandated orders and programs.

According to a U.S. Justice Department news release, on Oct. 9, 2012 federal officials caught Carroll in possession of a fake U.S. Marshals Service badge that was substantially similar to an authentic badge, and two fake U.S. Marshals Service identification cards.

This matter was investigated by the United States Marshals Service and state and local law enforcement agencies. The case was prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Anjna R. Kapoor and Assistant United States Attorney David E. Novick.
