Homeowner Wants Hopyard Fire Damage Repaired
Russ Bochain of East Haddam says he wants the state to fix the damage to his property caused by crews fighting a fire at Devil's Hopyard State Park.

According to a report by NBC Connecticut, Russ Bochain allowed the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) to utilize his property to set up a command post during the that swept through 130 acres of last week.
Bochain claims that when crews left, they also left behind $4,500 worth of damage to his driveway, lawn and landscaping.

The Hopyard fire broke out last week and is suspected to have been caused by human activity. The cause of the fire, however, is still officially under investigation.

Unseasonably low precipitation levels, low humidity and high winds added fuel to the fire, allowing it to spread quickly. Hemlocks in the Hopyard, according to the DEEP, were quickly consumed and added the fuel needed by the fire to continue to burn for days.
