The Healthy Communities-Healthy Kids Coalition hosted its third annual Family Dinner Night on Monday, September 23, 2013 at the H-K Middle School Cafeteria. Over 140 people from the Haddam-Killingworth community attended! Dino’s Pizza Restaurant provided the food for the evening, and coalition members and H-K Middle School’s staff helped serve the food. Connecticut State Representative Tom Vicino and Killingworth Selectwoman Catherine Iino came to support the event.
Family Day: Eat Dinner with Your Children is a national movement launched in 2001 by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse to promote the parental engagement fostered during frequent family dinners as a simple, effective way to prevent substance abuse in kids.
More than a decade of research by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University has consistently found that the more often kids eat dinner with their families, the less likely they are to smoke, drink or use drugs.

Family Day has evolved and expanded to reflect how important it is to connect with your kids at various times throughout the day including while driving your kids to soccer practice, tucking little ones into bed or having frequent family dinners. These every day activities have a lasting effect on your children. Each of these moments offers an opportunity to communicate with your kids and to really listen to what’s on their mind. Keep the conversations going!
The coalition is comprised of dedicated volunteers and all sectors of the Haddam and Killingworth community to engage youth and adults in advancing wellness. Funding is provided by the Drug Free Communities Support Program of the U.S. Department of Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
