Fire Breaks Out in East Haddam Home
Attic damaged, although no one was injured in the early morning incident.
EAST HADDAM — Firefighters from East Haddam, Salem and Colchester knocked down a fire that broke out in the attic of an East Shore Road home Thursday morning.
East Haddam Firefighter Wick Haylon said the incident took hold at 99 East Shore Drive around 10:30 a.m. in the floor of the attic, although the blaze was confined basically to two rafters.
Because the incident happened near Lake Hayward, the Salem Volunteer Fire Company arrived first and stopped the fire from spreading, Haylon said. The Colchester-Hayward Fire Department also responded for mutual aid assistance.

After that, all three fire departments were able to knock the fire down pretty quickly before it could spread further. There were no reports of any external damage and Haylon said its likely the residents won't be forced to leave.
“We spent more time chasing the fire for an extension and making sure it was not traveling anywhere,” Haylon said.

There were no injuries, Haylon said. He said it appears the fire sparked from an electrical issue, and the fire marshal is on scene investigating.
There was some water damage, although not a lot of smoke damage, he said.
