Fire Consumes Abandoned Paper Mill in Colchester

Roads were closed off in a half mile radius as crews from 9 towns responded to a four-alarm fire in a vacant Colchester mill.

 

Flames were reported at the old Norton Paper Mill on Route 149 just after 11:30 p.m. on Saturday night. By 1 a.m., the fire was a four-alarm. Roads were closed off in a half mile radius as crews from 9 neighboring towns responded.

At around midnight, the Colchester First Selectman, Gregg Schuster, took to Twitter to update residents on the status of the fire.

Around midnight he tweeted "Major structure fire. Old Norton Paper Mill on 149 is fully engulfed" followed at 2 a.m. with "Still burning. Going to be a while."

Officials say the building has been abondoned for nearly twenty years and no one was injured during the fire.
