Fishing Safety Tips
Saturday, May 12 is a free fishing day. Are you prepared to go it safe?
The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) has designated today as a where residents and non-residents are invited to fish in Connecticut without a license. In light of a recent that ended in tragedy, it is important to keep safety in mind when fishing.
“Fishing is a great outdoor activity for the entire family but precautions should always be taken to ensure it is a safe experience for everyone,” said Dwayne Gardner of the DEEP.

One such precaution would be to wear appropriate clothing for the location you are fishing in, especially when it comes to shoes, he says.
“Have good shoes on that have good traction (especially) if you are fishing where there is rock or water falls and fast moving water,” suggests Ron Bangs of the Haddam Higganum Sportsman Club. "If you are fishing with someone, it this good idea to fish where you can see each other."

Knowing the terrain of where you will be fishing is also a good idea, “especially if fishing at night,” recommends Gardner.

The DEEP suggests following these basic outdoor safety tips that also apply to fishing:
- Have a first aid kit with you.
- If possible, have a way to reach someone who might happen to fall in the water (pole, stick, life-saving ring, etc).
- If fishing alone, make sure someone knows where you are going to be and when you plan to be home. If possible, bring a cell phone with you.
- If in a boat or other vessel, check the DEEP website for requirements for the wearing of Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs). The DEEP always encourage the use of PFDs regardless of the requirements or conditions.
