Hillside Sweet Shoppe

One of the most important things in a small town is the small businesses that call the town home. These are run by your neighbors, friends, even family and often bolster the local economy by not only providing a friendly place to shop, but by bringing in additional revenues for the town. The East Haddam Business Association (EHBA), founded in the beginning of 2011, is committed to supporting locally-owned businesses and helping townspeople discover new, exciting places in town to visit. 

The Hillside Sweet Shoppe has been a long-time member of the Business Association and has greatly valued the sense of community they have gotten from participating in the various events and meetings that are held each month. Located at 19 Main Street in East Haddam, the Hillside Sweet Shoppe is a 32-year-old business which over the years has become a tradition for many area families and visitors. Owners Mary Milewski and Rich Mason bought the shop three years ago after being long-time customers because they had fond memories of going there as children and wanted their memorable experiences for their own children; their three young children were delighted when they bought the business.

As it has since 1979, the Hillside Sweet Shoppe features locally homemade ice cream that has earned a reputation for quality and creaminess. When asked her favorite flavor, Mary responded, “I love coming up with unique and tasty combinations, but Amaretto Cherry Chocolate is still one of my favorite flavors.” Since assuming ownership, Mary and Rich have made some delightful changes to the Sweet Shoppe. It now carries fresh fudge and new plush animals, and they also added a party room.

“We love to host parties for birthdays and other occasions. Our parties feature a huge Make-Your-Own Ice Cream Sundae Toppings Buffet, plus all the games, party bags, paper goods, balloons,” Milewski said. "The Hillside Sweet Shoppe is a lot of fun, if you're stopping in for ice cream with the family - or having a party in our party room."

The Hillside Sweet Shoppe is open year round.
