Hispanic Population Surging in Middlesex County

Census figures show a rising Hispanic population from 2011 to 2012.

More Hispanics and Latinos are moving to Middlesex County, so much so that this section of the state saw the highest increase from 2011 to 2012.

Citing the most recenty U.S. Census figures, CTLatinoNews.com reported that Middlesex County's Hispanic population rose 9.79 percent to 8,600 residents.

UConn Latino studies professor Charles Santiago told the news site the reason is likely because of the availability of low-wage service jobs and growing family connections.

U.S. Census figures show that Hispanics now make up 5.2 percent of Middlesex County's population, compared to 5.2 percent of black residents, 85.7 percent white residents and 2.8 percent Asians.
