Haddam-Killingworth- The AP Spanish class at HKHS and three teachers went to Spain from April 8th to April17th for a fabulous educational trip. This trip gave students the opportunity to use their Spanish in authentic cultural situations as well as further develop their global competency skills.
Students used Spanish while interacting with locals, tour guides and friends in both big cities and little villages. Students read, listened, spoke and wrote in Spanish while dealing with daily life activities such as shopping, asking for directions and reading menus. Knowledge about history and art from courses from HKHS (such as UCONN Spanish and World History) was transferred by students while exploring museums and monuments. Skills learned in the high school helped them adapt to new situations; for example, students were able to navigate following subway maps in Madrid, use the metric system while ordering food, and convert dollars to euros.
HKHS students were great ambassadors of our community and country. Their behavior was respectful and appropriate as they adapted to a variety of culturally-diverse settings. This experience has helped students move along on their journey of becoming global-minded people of the world.
